Three Dunes was the first installation from an ongoing exploration into fine-particle materials, the accidental and the designed, and the significance of a “trial and error” approach - as participants handled a catapult-type mechanism with increasing expertise and confidence.
Three Dunes revolves around a simple manually operated sprung lever, which catapults tiny quantities of fine kiln sand across a tilting wooden ‘canvas’. The angle of the canvas is adjusted to create increasingly precarious and changing forms.
Urban dunes was a subsequent site-specific interpretation of the same work, responding in scale and operation to its setting.
